"You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."
— Marcus Aurelius
Why This Works for Retroactive Jealousy
When retroactive jealousy strikes, your body enters fight-or-flight mode. Your heart races, your thoughts spiral, and your Default Mode Network (DMN) — the brain region responsible for rumination — goes into overdrive.
Controlled breathing interrupts this cycle through two mechanisms. First, it activates the vagus nerve, which signals your nervous system to shift from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) mode. Second, the counting required to follow a breathing pattern disrupts the DMN, breaking the rumination loop.
This is not a cure — it is a reset button. Use it to create space between you and the thought, then choose your next step with clarity.
